Craig Newmark School of Journalism is the first public graduate journalism school in the northeast, and it has made it a priority to give students from different backgrounds, income levels and life experiences, a greater access to the field.

The class of 2023 saw a slight increase in the percentage of female students, which accounts for 68% of seats. The number of male students enrolled in the M.A. in Journalism program dropped by 3 percentage points in 2023 as compared to 2022. They occupy 29% of the 90 total seats, equal to less than twice the number of female students.

The percentage of Hispanic students drops to 80 in 2023, compared to 93% in 2022. While people who identify as non-binary didn't make it to the class of 2023, they represented 7% of the students in 2022.
